Johnnie Keyes (1940–2018), often hailed as 'the last man standing' of the golden age porn pioneers, was a groundbreaking African-American adult film performer. One of the earliest Black pornstars, he led a multifaceted life before entering the industry: a Vietnam War veteran and boxer, stage performer in Hair, and resident in San Francisco's vibrant music scene with future rock stars like Ronnie Montrose. Keyes rocketed to fame in 1972 with his legendary interracial scene opposite Marilyn Chambers in Mitchell Brothers' Behind the Green Door, though it drew death threats that haunted him. He appeared in films like Sex World, sharing scenes with Leslie Bovee and Annette Haven. Charismatic and athletic, he earned a lifetime achievement AVN Award. Affable till the end, Keyes shared his stories in interviews. He died June 6, 2018, in Seattle from stroke complications at age 78.
