He transitioned to heterosexual roles, collaborated with stars like Vanessa del Rio (whom he dated), and earned XRCO Hall of Fame induction in 1999. Married four times, including long-term to casting agent Diane until her death, Payne retired in the late 1980s, faced hardships in 2015, but reflected on his career in 2021 interviews, emphasizing his acting prowess.
