John C. Holmes, born John Curtis Estes on August 8, 1944, in Ashville, Ohio, was an iconic American pornographic film actor known professionally as Johnny Wadd. He entered the adult industry in 1967 after nude modeling and rose to fame with the Johnny Wadd detective series starting in 1971. Holmes appeared in over 573 films, renowned for his exceptionally large penis—reportedly up to 16 inches long—which he insured for $14 million and earned him up to $3,000 per day. His life was marked by a troubled childhood, early Army service, multiple marriages, and drug addiction. In 1981, he was implicated in the brutal Wonderland murders in Los Angeles but acquitted in 1982. Diagnosed with HIV in 1986, Holmes succumbed to AIDS complications on March 13, 1988, at age 43. He was inducted into the XRCO Hall of Fame in 1985 and received a posthumous XBIZ Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008.
